What Have American Unions Ever Done for Us?

So, obviously the unions are important. I have worked as a loborer in manufacturing and service. Even as a non-union worker, I know that the unions' work benefited me. And as a non-union worker I have felt powerless against my employer when I felt they did me wrong. "There's the door if you don't like it!" As if there are just tons of jobs out there for me to go find another one. The main complaint I keep hearing is that the unions are "corrupted". What does that mean, is it true, and, if true, can it be fixed?
